How to Take Care of Your Roof
17 March 2025 · 2 min read

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home — it protects you from the elements, provides insulation, and adds to the overall appearance of your house. However, like any other part of your property, it requires regular maintenance to stay in top condition.
Inspect your roof regularly
Perform roof inspections at least twice a year — summer and winter — to check for the following signs of damage:
- Missing or cracked roofing materials (tiles, iron sheets, shingles)
- Rust spots on metal roofing
- Moss and algae growth
- Leaks or water stains on ceilings and walls inside your home
Keep your gutters clean
Blocked gutters cause water buildup, which can seep under your roofing materials, leading to leaks. Clean them at least twice a year, especially after autumn.
Tip: Installing gutter guards helps prevent blockages.
Trim overhanging trees
Branches can scratch or damage your roof, while leaves trap moisture, leading to mould. Trim back any trees too close to your roof.
Check for rust and corrosion
If you have a metal roof, look for rust — especially in coastal areas where salt-laden air speeds up corrosion. Use a wire brush to remove rust and apply a protective coating, or call us if the coating has failed.
Address leaks immediately
Water stains on ceilings indicate a leak, which can lead to costly structural damage. Addressing leaks early helps prevent rot and further deterioration of your roof.
Consider roof coating
Roof coatings protect against UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes while extending the lifespan of your roof — but they are not a substitute for a roof that is already at the end of its life.
Professional inspections
Hire a professional roofer every few years to inspect weak points and suggest proactive solutions.
